ICMR Short-Term Studentship Program 2023-24 is an opportunity offered by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to undergraduate medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) students enrolled in medical and dental colleges recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council of India (DCI). The selected students will receive a monthly stipend of ₹25,000 for two months and an e-certificate after completion of the studentship.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must:-

    • be an Indian national
    • be an MBBS/BDS student studying at a medical/dental college recognised by the Medical Council of India/Dental Council of India (MCI/DCI)
    • conduct the research at their own medical/dental college under the guidance of a full-time faculty member employed by the college

    Non-eligibility 

    • Applicants currently enrolled in internship programs or postgraduate studies are ineligible.
    • Students pursuing paramedical or non-medical courses are not eligible.
    • Students from foreign medical or dental colleges are ineligible to apply.

    Note:- 

    Students holding OCI cards, PIO cards, or who are NRIs studying in Indian medical/dental colleges can also apply.

    Benefits

    The selected students will receive a stipend of ₹25,000 per month for two months. This stipend is paid only after research completion and approval of the final report.

    The research costs will be borne by the institution/medical college where the research is conducted.

    Following established guidelines, an e-certificate will be issued to the student's email address within 2-3 months of the report result announcement.

    • Copy of Overseas Citizen of India Card (OCI)/Person of Indian Origin Card (PIO)/Non-Resident Indian (NRI) card (Note:- This is required for international students only.)
    • Student's bank account details
    • A scanned copy of a cancelled cheque
    • Passbook or chequebook from the bank 
    • Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC)/ Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) approval letter (if research involves human/animal participants)
    How can you apply?

    Eligible applicants can apply for the studentship by following the below steps: 
    Step 1:
    Click on the 'Apply Now' button.
    Step 2: Click on the 'Register' button and fill in the required details to register. (Note:- If already registered, log in using Gmail/Mobile Number/Email ID.)
    Step 3: Read the details carefully, navigate to the 'Login for STS Report Submission 2023' at the top right-hand side of the dashboard, and click on it.
    Step 4: Read the instructions carefully and log in using valid credentials.
    Step 5: Fill in the required details, upload the necessary documents, and submit.

    Note:- 

    • STS is an online program, students are not allowed to submit hard copies.
    • Students must register for the studentship by the deadline. The registration period closes at the end of January each year.
    • The results will be announced on the STS website. The list of awardees will be displayed until the first week of April.
    • The STS-2023 Report Submission Form comprises three parts: A, B, and C. Students must carefully complete and review the form before submitting it.

Selection Criteria

The STS-2023 reports will be evaluated technically by a panel of experts. Students whose reports are found satisfactory will be selected and notified.

Note:- The decision of ICMR regarding the selection of students will be final.

Terms and Conditions

Guide Policies:- 

  • The student will be assigned a full-time, regular faculty member employed by the medical/dental college as their guide.
  • Only permanent full-time faculty members working in any of the medical/dental college departments where the student is enrolled can serve as the guide.
  • Part-time consultants, visiting faculty, residents, readers, tutors, pool officers, demonstrators, postgraduate students, and surgeons cannot serve as guides.
  • ICMR will recognise only one primary guide for the STS report. The guide must take overall responsibility for the conduct of the research project, preparation and submission of the complete report and the required enclosures within the stipulated period.

Ethical Considerations:-

  • The student should obtain prior clearance/approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) if the proposal involves research on human participants and from the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) if the work involves the use of animals.
  • Research conducted without prior approval from the relevant ethics committee will not be accepted.
  • Applicants must obtain prior approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) of the medical/dental college where they are enrolled, with the approval date no later than 31st December 2023.

Plagiarism:- 

  • STS reports containing evidence of research misconduct, including intellectual dishonesty, theft, duplication, fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism at any stage of proposal preparation, project conduct, data recording, analysis, or report writing will be rejected.
  • All ICMR submissions must be prepared by the student under the supervision of a faculty member.
  • ICMR has the authority to approve, reject, or request revisions to a report.
  • The students are required to sign a declaration stating that the work is original and has not been plagiarised from any other sources.

Other Conditions:- 

  • Students must follow the latest instructions updated on the ICMR website.
  • The stipend will be transferred only to the selected student's bank account via RTGS or NEFT by 30th September 2024, upon ICMR approval of the report. Joint accounts or accounts held by parents/guardians, advisors, or anyone else are not allowed.
  • A student can receive the ICMR-STS fellowship only once during their MBBS/BDS program.
